On a Mac
You can often access the speakers in the top right of your desktop next to your clock

If this isn't available. You can go to System Preferences -> Sound

The Input tab lets you test the internal microphone and switch on ambient noise reduction to reduce background noises so you sound better.

Note: On Macbooks the microphone input tends to be a small hole on the right of the laptop which can easily get covered up.
